Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, alternative indie rock band Fools For Rowan is the ultimate blend of powerful vocals and instrumentals. Only together for a little over a year, the band is already being raved about. The band’s enthralling front vocalist Erin Mullins could not have a more sultry voice. On the drums is Jordan Cullen and on bass is Andrew “Gibby” Williams, with Ryan Harrison Nanney on rhythm guitar and Rachel Brandsness on lead guitar.  An energetic band live, they have had no problem developing their huge fan base. Always willing to give a great show no matter the audience, Fools For Rowan is creating a worthy name in the music business and is definitely on the radar of bands to look out for in the coming year.

Their debut album Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled came out at the end of 2009 and got rave reviews. The band quickly went on tour after around both coasts of the United States. Since the debut album, they have opened up for bands such as Sick Puppies, Halestorm, and Adelitas Way and most recently played in Nashville’s War Memorial Auditorium with rockers Evanescence. Coming from the hometown of famous bands such as Paramore and Kings Of Leon, the band is often compared to the two very successful bands in regards to their lead female singers and strong guitar riffs, respectively. Yet, Fools for Rowan is so different, and in a good way, but they still have that southern edge. Not only does Fools for Rowan have two badass female members but those females are the lead vocalist and lead guitarist of the band. A refreshing sound so unlike the rock-alternative bands out there today, the band knows how to play beautiful and pure rock music, shy of chords being too catchy and predictable.

One stand-out song from the album is “Dead” whose video was featured on Fuse TV and Havoc TV. Extremely well rounded with intense lyrics, brilliant talent at instruments, and the strong, textured voice of Erin Mullins make this a song, an entire album, which deserves to be replayed over and over again. Currently signed to Lava Lamp Records, fans can expect a myriad amount of exciting things from the group. According to the band, they enjoy “good music, good times, good friends, good food and rockin’ face! We’re also pretty fond of road trips.” Perhaps hopefully foreshadowing another album and tour on the way, this band quote perfectly displays their love for their fans and just creating good music.

Fools For Rowan could only have happened faster if they’d sprung fully formed from Zeus’ forehead. The Nashville-based quintet is comprised of seasoned veterans and within months of forming FFR, the band had recorded its debut album, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled., opened shows for Halestorm and Sick Puppies and garnered a metric ton of good press, particularly for lead vocalist Erin Mullins, who’s been favorably compared to Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Pat Benatar and Heart’s Wilson sisters. Nashville's latest indie rock success story Fools For Rowan and their debut album Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled are a fresh breath of "lipstick rock" that still holds on to classic chick band characteristics while also having a certain level of machismo in the chemistry.

Singer Erin Mullins is blessed with a voice that could belong to either the vocalist of an old James Bond film intro or Amy Lee's twin sister that still does attempt not mask the natural southern belle factor in her voice.

Powered by an incredibly talented band, which includes great riff writing wizardress Rachel Brandsness, who along with the FFR male counterparts creates undeniably great tunes, which to me in most instances sound more pop-punk than anything else. This is especially evident in songs such as "Tangled," Light It Up" and "Living Dangerously." Other songs on the album like "Isn't It Enough" and "I Don’t Have The Strength" possess a far more country singer/songwriter feel. Still, the best song on the album title has to go to "It's Alright" which contrasts the bulk of the album in a far more positive, uplifting direction.

Fools For Rowan's sound is simple yet unique in its own indie, alternitive, pop-punk, country, lipstick rock kind of way that manages to mend together surprisingly quite well.

Certainly a band that is capable of not only making great songs but capable of making very different sounding great songs, which is the true test of a great band.

Nashville has long been known for helping to define the Country music landscape, both traditionally and on the modern scene. Just about every major Country artist has either recorded or spent time in the city, helping to coin its nickname as the “Music City.” But, if you look a little deeper, beyond the Country façade, you can find some amazingly talented Rock bands that are making a name for themselves in Nashville and beyond. Bands such as Fools for Rowan, who, with their high-energy Rock, screaming leads and poignant lyrics, are proving that Nashville isn’t all about Stetsons, acoustic guitars and Country ballads. These guys and gals can really rock, regardless of what city they’re from.

Guitar International recently sat down with Fools for Rowan’s Rachel Brandsness to talk about the Nashville music scene, her love of Gibson guitars and where the band got its unique name.

Rachel Brandsness

Rachel Brandsness

******

Matt Warnock: You and the band are located in Nashville, which is known for its long history of Country music. What’s it like being a Rock band in a city that’s famous for its Country roots?

Rachel Brandsness: It’s interesting. I grew up in Oregon and moved to Nashville when I was 18, so I wasn’t infused by the whole Country thing like some people who grew up here. I always knew that I wanted to play Rock music, so when I came to Nashville, I had that perception as well, that everyone here plays Country and that’s what you have to assimilate to. But, I came out here before I moved to Nashville, just to see what the city is like, and behold, there are all these underground Rock clubs, there’s Hip-Hop, even Metal bands, if you know where to look you can find this very diverse scene here in Nashville.

We always knew that we wanted to be a Rock band, and it’s almost been a blessing in that it’s helped us stand out. We’ll get people who think we’re going to be a Country band, coming from Nashville, but when they hear us they go, “Oh, that’s cool, I wasn’t expecting that.” So it’s worked to our advantage in certain instances.

Matt: Did you check out other scenes, like L.A. or New York, before deciding on moving to Nashville, or did you always kind of know that this city was going to be for you?

Rachel: My decision to move away from Oregon was based on two things, the first being me finding a College to go to, and the second was me finding a music scene to be a part of, because ultimately I wanted to play guitar. I had been to Southern California a couple of times, and I did check out New York and Boston. Then, just kind of at random we heard about Belmont University, which is in Nashville. So my mom and I decided to come and check it out and I ended up liking Nashville more than the other cities that I had visited. It just kind of happened that way.

Matt: What did you study as far as your degree when you got to Belmont?

Rachel: I studied Music Business and Music Production. I thought about being a Commercial Guitar major, but it seemed more valuable for me to come out of my degree being well-rounded. I had been playing guitar for years, so I wanted to come out of there knowing the inside of the business and not just saying I can play every scale known to mankind. [Laughs]

Rachel Brandsness

Rachel Brandsness

Matt: The field of lead guitar in Rock has long been dominated by men. Do you think that there are more women coming into the genre today and have you ever had negative experiences with people because you are a woman who plays lead guitar?

Rachel: It’s still kind of interesting. A lot of times when we’re loading in our gear and getting ready for soundcheck, and it’s a venue where they use their own sound person and they’re not used to us, they’ll always assume that I’m the rhythm player, that the girl can’t be the lead player. [Laughs] A lot of times before a show somebody will come up to us and I’ll be mistaken for the singer before they see us. But, after they see us they’ll come up to us and say, “Whoa, I knew you played guitar but I didn’t know that you played like that!”

I think you have to prove yourself more when you’re a woman. There are a lot of woman who play really well, but their focus is singing and they play to accompany themselves. But, singing is definitely not my forte, so I’m more into lead playing, which brings me into some interesting conversations from time to time.

Matt: Which guitars are you using right now, live and in the studio?

Rachel: I have two favorites that I play both in the studio and live. I have a Gibson 2009 Studio, the Silverburst model, it’s pretty sweet. I love that, because I love how big the tone is. You can just roll the tone forever. I also have a ’67 SG Junior. I bring that on the road, but sometimes I think that’s the dumbest idea ever. [Laughs] Those are definitely my two favorites. I also have a Fender Strat that I’ve played a couple times. I like that tone for calmer stuff, then I like my P-90 pickups for the Rock stuff.

Matt: Fools for Rowan has recently opened up for some big acts such as Sick Puppies, who are all over the radio right now. What’s that like, getting to open for a huge name like that?

Rachel: It’s really cool. It’s almost kind of hard to put that feeling into words. It’s a big rush to go out there and play, then go to the side of the stage and watch these big-name bands just kill it. It’s a humbling experience to be a part of what they’re doing.

Matt: The band, Fools for Rowan, has a very unique name. Where’d the band’s name come from?

Rachel: Erin, our lead singer, she took her Mom’s name, which is Robin, and her Grampa’s name, which is Darwin, and meshed those two together to make Rowan. When she was growing up, those were the two people in her family who encouraged her to follow her dreams and be a singer. She’s our fearless leader, she formed the band. So that’s where the Rowan part comes from, and then the Fools For part just fell into place after that.

“Dead” – Fools For Rowan

As a quick reminder, I only feature music that I actually like, not just what is passed onto me. That being said, I like a lot of music and can easily identify when talent is present. A majority of music on this blog is dominated by raspy male voices or sweet-sounding singer-songwriters. I could probably count on one hand the number of artists I’ve featured that include lead vocals by a female. So when my friend Shaunelle told me about Fools For Rowan, I wasn’t quite sure I’d be a fan. I must say however, if you like Paramore and Hayley Williams (which I do!), you need to check out this group.

Lead singer Erin Mullins has some killer vocals that are more than impressive on the groups’ album Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.  The band (Mullins, Rachel Brandsness, Aaron Elliot, Ryan Nanney, and Jordan Cullen) comes from Nashville, TN (Paramore stems from the state as well) and a fitting southern edge is swiftly embedded in their alternative sound. This is particularly shown on one of my favorite tracks, “Living Dangerously”. (PS, this video is shot in NYC so that makes me love it more.)

When I first heard the song below, I pictured it on a Twilight soundtrack. Lo and behold, the group has already put it to clips from the film. “Dead” is beautifully haunting and stunningly crafted. With this track alone, Fools For Rowan have proved themselves to be a strong contender in the music industry.

Again, since female-driven vocals do not always interest me, I was pleased to find something refreshing in a world of Ke$ha and P!nk. (Stylizing your name with punctuation or symbols does not make you cool.)  If you agree, be sure to check Fools For Rowan out and head over to their official band page to pick up a free song!

Erin of Fools for RowanIt’s not often a new band comes along with a fresh sound that takes up the rock n roll flag and runs with it. You may have heard their sound before, but you have never heard Fools for Rowan. Just like you heard rock n roll before Led Zeppelin, they just put it in a whole new dimension. I’m not saying Fools for Rowan is the “new” Led Zeppelin, I’m saying that Fools for Rowan will help you appreciate music again after all the tired and warn out corporate pop or untalented basement bands.

Is it that the songs are so good? Is it that the band is so good? Is it that, lead singer, Erin’s voice is so textured and powerful? Is it the quality of the production? Is it the X factor that is undefinable? I say all the above!

Did I mention that this band is led by a sultry female singer and a badass female guitar player (see photos below).  If the guy’s in the band read this, I’m sorry. You guys are cool and all, but who can ignore talented rock n roll girls?

Believe me? Check out these hd music videos for “Burnt Around the Edges” and “Dead“. Or head over to Fools for Rowan’s website and learn more about the band and pick up their music.

Artist Review - Fools For Rowan

From Left to right: Erin Mullens, Aaron Elliot, Jordan Cullen, Ryan Nanney, Rachel Brandsnes

A rising star - Fools For Rowan

As an Author, Radio Personality, and sometimes Critic it is very few and far between when I run across talent that blows me away. The band Fools For Rowan is one of those talents. Lead singer, Erin Mullens has a stunning voice that will captivate and enthrall you. The instrumentals provided by her accompanying band members are equally amazing. As you listen to this band you can hear the commitment to their craft in every note.

On April 1st, Fools For Rowan visited myself and my co-host Wickid, on our radio show Livin' the Dream. In addition to sharing an acoustic performance of their songs with our listeners, they also shared details about the band and made for a great interview. The next day, I was able to see them perform live at a club in Dallas, TX called Fat Daddys. It's no joke that dynamite comes in small packages. Live, on stage the band takes on a whole new persona and you can tell that they love what they do.

In my line of work, I often meet and interview all kinds of talent from bands to  models, and even actors. I love running across talent that works well together.  Each one of the members of Fools For Rowan gives 100% of themselves to the growth of the band. Each member works hard to contribute in a positive way and they all get along so well. It is absolutely refreshing.  Each member has a respect and adoration for their fellow band mates and it adds to their success.

I invite you to take the time to listen to this band and to get to know Fools For Rowan. You can find them on social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, and they have a website which is www.foolsforrowan.com You do not want to miss out seeing this band rise to the top of the charts. Their album Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. is a true treat for rock fans of any age.

Albums top songs: Dead, Living Dangerously, Tangled, Burnt Around The Edges, and Light Me Up.

Fools For Rowan: Average Band, Awesome Singer

Fools For Rowan play some ok-ish alt rock, which really isn’t my thing but i’m sure Nickelback fans the world over will love it.

However they really do need to be talked about because of how flippin awesome the singer, Erin Mullins, is. Now that Katy Perry is ruined I need another female singer to fall in love with, otherwise all my attention Will go to Hayley Williams and I will probably get arrested or something.

So Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you Erin Mullins!

Fools for Rowan - Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.

The word ‘Tennessee’ reminds whisky to most people, the home of Jack Daniels. But to people like me it means a lot more if there is a ‘Nashville’ before that Tennessee. The city has been an inspiration for many musicians or anyone who is a little bit interested in music. It is the home to the marvellous Gibson Guitars and it’s many luthiers that build the custom Gibsons along with many other top-notch instruments. Fools for Rowan is a band I came across when I was wandering on MySpace. For reasons I’ve explained earlier, when you see ‘Nashville TN’ on the location your expectations are a bit higher than any other band. Fools for Rowan consists of Erin Mullins, Rachel Brandsness, Aaron Elliot, Ryan Nanney and Jordan Cullen. They are probably friends from high school or something but of course that’s none of my concern. Although I don’t like 5-piece bands very much, it is good to see a girl (Rachel) playing the lead guitar. These kids didn’t betray their hometown, both Rachel and Ryan plays Gibsons both on and off the stage. Erin stands out to be the only member of the group who doesn’t play an instrument.

Their first album called ‘Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.’ was released in 2009 and has two singles so far. Fools for Rowan’s style reminds me of Evanescence, some how hard rock with a hint of punk and gothic looks. The album opens with ‘Burnt Around the Edges’, a proper rock song with catchy guitar riffs accompanied by some (probably double tracked) excellent vocals by Erin. The album’s hit song (IMHO) is ‘Dead’, the fourth track which also has an excellent video (can be seen here) but my favourite is the live version of the song that you can watch below. I must say this is one of the best live performance videos I’ve seen on YouTube so far.

I find it much better than the album version. I thought this was a song written by someone else but when you watch the video you clearly understand that it is written by Erin. It is also quite hard to understand why the producer added strings to this song. I am no producer or anything close but it definitely sounds much better without those strings. Besides you don’t hear any other strings during the album apart from this song. The rest of the album goes with a slightly slower pace and there isn’t any song that attracts attention. Track 10 ‘Living Dangerously’ reminds me of ‘Still Waiting’ by Sum41 a little bit. Actually it reminds me “a lot” of ‘Still Waiting’.

To sum it up, ‘Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.’ is not the best album of the world but not bad either, it is exactly what you expect from a new band. My opinion is that they’re ready to go national. After all they’re living in a country where the Jonas Brothers are famous. If they play their cards right, and a little bit of luck they can be the next Evanescence. Members of Fools for Rowan seem to have enough musician skills and looks to attract rebellious teenagers but they still have to concentrate a little bit more on song writing.

Fools for Rowan
Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled

Fools For Rowan - Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.

Combine a plethora of power chords and a belter voice and add a splash of angst and you have got yourself a recipe for a rock band. Fools for Rowan followed the recipe to make their frosh album Twisted. Tied up. Tangled. a treat for those with female, rock inclined ears.

Lead singer Erin Mullins has a deliciously coarse, mature voice. She can belt with the best. With a voice reminiscent of Ms. Joplin and Ms. Benatar, Mullins is not shy about her feelings. Her voice gives the lyrics some serious ‘tude. This album had all the potential to be a Hot Topic, teenage angst record. Mullins’ mature voice allowed that not to happen. It’s distinctively not whiny, refined rock if you will.
The instrumentals in contrast to Mullins’ voice, in theory, shouldn’t work. They proved theory wrong, and make it happen. The power chords and intense guitar riffs in combination with such a “sultry” rock voice makes Twisted. Tied up. Tangled. sound like it will be good for many years rather than sounding like a “it’s cool for 10 seconds” album. With a variety of pacing, there really isn’t much chance of overplaying it to the point of hatred.
I am usually not a fan of remixes, but these “fools” did it right. The remix for “Burnt Around the Edges” managed to FINALLY make a good alt-rock remix that didn’t want me to take a drill to my temple. Of all things, they added a cello. A cello is apparently the key to rock remix success. I am not an advocate of remixing anything for sheer redundancy, but they did it right so exceptions can (and will) be made. Fools for Rowan proves to be the exception to the rule in more ways than one.
Sounds Like: Silversun Pickups crossed with 10,000 Maniacs with Janis Joplin/Pat Benetar-esque vocals.

Musicians Interview: Fools For Rowan

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Fools for Rowan have been touring the US in support of their new album, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. and have been collecting fans like Pokemon cards. With a new music video for their single, “Dead” this Nashville five-some knows what it takes to give the fans what they want and keep it coming.

Fools for Rowan is a unique band name, who is Rowan and how did you come up with the name?

I came up with the name Rowan when I combined my mother’s name, Robyn, with my grandfather’s name, Darwin.  They were both instrumental in me following my dream of becoming a singer.  So when I was putting this band together and we needed a name, I thought why not give credit where credit is due!

You’ve shared the stage with some big name acts such as Sick Puppies and Halestorm, what has been your favorite live experience so far?

That’s a tough one, but performing at Summerfest 2010 with Sick Puppies and Halestorm was definitely a show we will never forget!  The stage was awesome, the crowd was amazing, and overall it was just an incredible experience!  If we had to pick another show that was up there in the ranks of Summerfest, we’d have to say the October 2010 show we played in Milwaukee, WI.  The energy the fans brought to that show was unbeatable!

Which song off the new album Twisted. Tied Up, Tangled. seems to get the crowd excited the most?

“It’s Alright” or “Tangled,” it’s a tie!  We play our songs a little different in concert than they are on the record.  During “It’s Alright” we like to have the crowd help us out and they always rock it!!!  “Tangled” just seems to bring out some crazy energy in our fans!

Having both a female lead singer and lead guitarist is not very common in the rock world, how has this been a challenge or has it made it easier to set you apart?

The fact that having both a female lead singer and a female lead guitarist is such a novelty in rock, and really any genre of music, has been a major blessing to FFR!  It has really helped to further set us apart in a world saturated by so many bands with similar songs and similar looks and builds.  FFR is not your stereotypical rock band and Erin and Rachel are not your stereotypical female accents to the rock and roll boy’s club.  They show up ready to lay down the riffs and send the vocals soaring.

Fools for Rowan is known to have great relationships with their fans, however there must be one or two crazy fans stories, care to share one?

We have so many fantastic fans!  We’ve had fans drive across states for hours just to see us perform!  We try to keep up with our fans as well as we can on Facebook, but we did end up with one fan who got a little too attached to the band via Facebook.  We’re pretty sure he took out a mortgage, built a house, and lived on our Facebook page…  At one point he emailed our label requesting a few autographed items, so we sent them to him!  But then a few days later we got some angry hate mail from the guy because we didn’t send him every single thing he asked for… Talk about touchy!

Recently you shot a music video for your song “Dead,” what was the best part about filming?

Filming for the video for “Dead” was awesome and painful at the same time, haha!  Awesome part… We had an amazing director, and an awesome crew that helped everything run smoothly and turn out perfect!  Plus we pretty much have a blast in everything we do, and making a video is no exception!  Painful part… it was freezing cold in just about every shot!  The church we filmed in didn’t have heat, so it was 35 degrees in there and Erin had to stand in a sleeveless dress for hours!

One of the albums final tracks is called “Living Dangerously,” what are some of the most dangerous things the band has done together?

Ha!  Well one night in particular comes to mind, I think it was in Ohio.  After the show we heard a lot of sirens so we looked outside and it looked like there was a house on fire a few blocks away, so we decided to walk down that way and see what was going on.  We got one block away from the venue and ended up in the sketchiest neighborhood ever!  I mean I don’t scare very easily, I like to think I’m pretty tough, but I knew it was getting serious when Aaron grabbed my shoulder and said ‘just keep walking and don’t say anything’.  As a general rule, I don’t like to live quite so dangerously that there is an actual chance that I might get shanked.

Fools For Rowan CD Review By: Macavity

FOOLS FOR ROWAN
“Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.”

By: Macavity

Combine Pat Benatar, Avril Lavigne and a touch of Shania Twain and you get a good clue as to what the amazing vocals sound like on this great band. Add in tight performance and production of the instruments and you get an extraordinary band. Don’t get fooled though that band sounds anything retro or cookie cutter. They have created their own sound and with this CD they prove that they own that individual sound quite well! With a great combination of rock and just the right amount of musical variety, they make each and every song something intriguing to listen to from this album.

“Burnt Around The Edges” is a great tune that is certainly worthy of being a radio single and showcases the bands talent with a rock and pop feel that is worth many listens.”Dead” has to be one of the standout tracks on the album for the perfection in tempo and a sultry vocal that matches the melancholy feel of the tune. Not a down song at all but rather one that just expresses an emotion through music and lyrics exceptionally well. “Tangled” give you a clue as to the versatility of the band and their music. Much more up tempo, it give you a taste of their ability to do a full on rock song that has strong vocals that match the music. They even throw in a definite southern rock twist which makes the band all the more interesting to listen to. “No” follows their versatility by slowing things down and doing a power ballad that is chocked full of emotion and the music and lyrics that match perfectly. “It’s Alright” gives another facet to this band with a song that could easily be a crossover to the rock/country genre and again is another tune worthy of being a single in a couple of different genres.

It is hard to decide as you listen to the album which song you like the best and whether you like the slower sultry songs or the pop sounding faster tempo tunes or whether it is that full on rock sound that is the favorite. I tend to think they all are favorites for different moods they evoke while listening and also for the quality of the band and their album. Just buy the CD and discover for yourself why they have such a great following of loyal fans. You won’t be disappointed at all!

Fools for Rowan

Fools for Rowan – Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled = ***

Women have always held a place in rock ‘n’ roll, but it would seem that it’s only been the last 20 or so years that their presence as musicians has actually been deemed legitimate. As of late, female-fronted rock bands have out-sold similar sounding male-fronted bands and thus boosting their level of importance in the rock world. Bands like Evanescence, Lacuna CoilParamore, and No Doubt have paved the way for modern rock bands that want to flex their feminine side and Fools for Rowan are speeding down that path.

The Nashville quartet rounded out by singer Erin Mullins; guitarists Rachel Brandsness and Ryan Nanney; bassist Aaron Elliot; and drummer Jordan Cullen, have fashioned a sparkling gem of pop-rock girl-power on their debut, Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled. The lyrical themes are standard faire of a 20-something rock group—relationships (good and bad), inner struggles and anthems of personal strength—basically the proper fuel for confused and emotionally charged teens and rock loving ladies.

The most impressive feature of the band is the age and soul in Mullins’ voice. With vocals somewhere between Ann Wilson of Heart and Carrie Underwood, Mullins is more than your typical auto-tuned, disposable pop singer. This quality will lend to a longer lasting career for the band-- that is, of course, if they can figure out a clear sonic direction.

It would seem the band has two separate musical thought processes in mind when it comes to their song craft: big, catchy, mid to fast-tempo, pop-rock songs (“Burnt Around the Edges,” “Light Me Up,” “It’s Alright”) and solo-artist, top 40, mid-paced tracks (“Take Me Down,” “I Don’t Have the Strength,” “Isn’t It Enough”). And, when FFR turn on the rocking octane, they can burn pretty fast (“Tangled,” “Living Dangerously”), and it’s also where Brandsness’ lead guitar shines most.

It’s not hard to want to categorize Mullins as a pop-rock princess solo act, but I doubt that her band would want that to happen. Here’s hoping the group can be associated with the likes of Halestorm and notKelly Clarkson. They’d do well to remain in the true rock world and help bring more girls to the party.

CD Review: Fools For Rowan Got "Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled."

The female fronted, Fools For Rowan are gathering fans the old-fashion way, with simple rock riffs and constant touring. The band released their debut album in 2009 and have been touring the US ever since.

The album's lead-off single "Burnt Around The Edges" is a great introduction to the band's sound. Lead singer Erin Mullins gets to flex her vocals over the song's chorus while the rest of the band just builds up the song's energy. The song reached the Top 40 on college and modern rock radio, along with a video for the song playing in rotation on Fuse TV. The band's second single "Dead" shows us their softer sound as the powerful lyrics carry the song with another strong, memorable chorus. Fools For Rowan return to their energetic rock sound in the song "Tangled," but quickly change gears again with the ballads "No" and "I Don't Have The Strength." The album finishes with the quick drumming of "Living Dangerously" which gives the song an uplifting sound.

The album "Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled." was released in November 2009 and is available on iTunes and on Amazon. The band is once again on tour with dates scattered in February and March. Visit foolsforrowan.com for a complete list of tour dates as well and song samples and album info.

Fools For Rowan Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled Review

Buy it on Amazon or iTunes

This five-piece band brings something fresh in rock stage. They rock with their album Twisted. Tied Up and Tangled. It is reassuring to see than this musical style has a bright future ahead. Led by singer Erin Mullins and backed byJordan Cullen (drums), Aaron Elliott (bass),Ryan Harrison Nanney (rhythm guitar) andRachel Brandsness (lead guitar), the band showcases on this album their abilities to create an interesting and a potential legendary music. Later, we will always remember this music and it is not given to everyone.

I highly recommend Dead. This track is a radio-single. I suggest radios to play again this wonderful rock ballad, that  received spins on Top 40, college and modern rock radio and the video was featured on Fuse TV’s On-Demand. Just to show to your listeners that there are bands, maybe less well known that deserve to go and see them, support them in their musical journey. Anyway, their music immediately grab your attention. No doubt at the first listen.

Erin Mullins reminds of me a little bit of Pat Benatar and Blondie somewhere… on Burnt Around the Edges. Easy to understand why this debut single received acclaim from college radio in the US and Canada. The licks are somewhere infectious with some taste to replay.  In every song, it is pretty different. I am hooked by the guitar parts in It’s All Right and Living Dangerously. The pure Rock N Roll track Tangled is not to neglect. You do not regret the listen.

Through soaring vocals and inspiring lyrics, they offer us a great mixture of 80′s tune with modern and creative rock sounds. I am impressed. The musicianship is already here. The band has been playing together for just over a year and is already on the fast track to stardom.

They also have shared the stage with such notable rock bands as HalestormSick PuppiesAdelita’s Way and Throwing Gravity.

Now, Fools For Rowan continues  to tour throughout the US, winning over audiences and continuing to spread the power of rock & roll. If you haven’t yet came and see them live, hurry up. You miss something.

Rock N Roll ExperienceExpand

Rating: 4.7 stars!

Imagine if Shania Twain did a rock record...this is what it might sound like...the band Fools For Rowan have a vibrant female singer named Erin Mullins who breathes life into the tracks on the bands latest opus, "Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled" & it's interesting that the best song on the record is the song "Tangled" which borrows the line that's also the name of this record..."Twisted" is the direction I wish the band stayed in for most of this record...instead there's mellow & forgettable moments that make the record blend in with background...the first 3 songs are decent but "Twisted" should have been the lead single & opening number so atleast you caught the listeners attention with a fast, uptempo rocker.

"Light Me Up" is a good song but sadly the production is just bland & I won't blame the songwriting I'll just say that the overall production is lacking in something because there's a quality that Halestorm has which, when you hear it, you just know it's magic...Fools For Rowan have potential, just the batch of songs on this record are not that special.

"Living Dangerously" is the 2nd to last song on the record & it's also the only other song that REALLY caught my attention with it's fun, fast, rockin' tone...it's reckless pop abandonment & it's a great song.

The last song on the record is a remix of "Burnt" & it's edgy simply because it's experimental but again, not the best song on this record.

Fools For Rowan have potential, they just lack overall quality with certain songs on this record & that's where a good producer would set the band down & explain that there's got to be more...the general direction of certain songs are just very generic & again, "Living Dangerously" is the direction this band SHOULD be headed!

A Vivoscene Review by Marin Nelson

Every decade in rock needs a commanding female vocal which defines, or challenges, the times; in the 70s it was Heart’s Crazy On You; then Alannah Myles with Black Velvet; Garbage’s Shirley Manson with Only Happy When It Rains; Evanescence’s Amy Lee with Broken. Once you get past the fact that Fools For Rowanfrontwoman Erin Mullins is every interstate biker’s dream, you might just hear that potential in her whiskey-soaked voice. Because damn, she has some pipes.

Fools For Rowan emerged from Nashville, the bedrock of American music, in 2009 with their debut albumTwisted. Tied Up. Tangled. The fivesome has since enjoyed an aftermath of successes, touring with the likes of rock powerhouses Halestorm and Sick Puppies. Although it’s their onstage presence which is garnering them attention, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. deserves some further review.

Fools For Rowan has been labelled as Lipstick Rock, but that’s not doing them justice. Sure, with lead guitarist Rachel Brandsness, they have a strong female presence – but there’s nothing “Maybelline” about it. The album opens with Burnt Around the Edges, and we’re immediately confronted with the spine-chilling impact of Mullins’ voice, which vaults off some killer riffs from the three accompanying guitars. Watch a live performance here:

Dead, pared down and acoustic, will have you floored by the way Mullins’ voice can go from rough to syrupy sweet in seconds. Satisfying harmonies develop with help from a subtle, well-chosen orchestra.

Tangled, the title track, has a strong narrative and impressive pacing. This song really drives home the theme of corrupting love that Fools For Rowan has explored.

Normally a well-rounded, ten song offering triggers alarm, but none of these tracks could be labelled as “filler”. Most of the tracks have a clear formula to them, but what they lack in musical adventurousness, they more than make up for in content that’s universally appealing. Some of the images, like setting things on fire, are recycled throughout, but you can’t deny it’s a successful one (see Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire.) Fools For Rowan also has a charming way of injecting some Southern tenors in the same way that Kings of Leon, also a Nashville-born band, has mastered. And if they maintain their energy and pace, they could reach the same heights.

It’s no big secret why Fools for Rowan, from Nashville, TN, are pocketing followers so velociously, that the "Branch Davidians" would be drooling.  As well as have diehards, stalking the country for their fix.   Amidst benevolent and impassioned personalities and over-sized hearts.  Is an artistic genius that radiates throughout every verse.  They combine rock-solid lyrics and an innovative musical IQ.  Seamlessly blending the soul and style of music’s past, with an updated, fresh vibe and uniqueness all their own. Giving them the ability to overshadow any competition in their path and  all the tools required,  to not only build their ark and survive the stagnant flooded market.  But to maintain their vessel for years to come.

What’s so pleasantly infecting about this group, you ask?  For starters, standing tall at 5’1".  Fools for Rowan’s fearless and resplendent lead singer Erin Mullins’ voice backpacks a paramount range that would give Mariah Carey the chills. Efficacious enough to cut glass, calm enough to lull the crankiest baby to sleep.  Imagine laying down on freshly washed linens.  Relaxing.  All is peaceful, then WHAM!  Someone cracks you in the kisser with a freshly laundered sock full of quarters.  Yeah…. it’s like that.  Meshing her prowess, with the "Heart" inspired musical passions of charming lead shredder Rachel Brandness.  Who never ceases to amaze, with her

gregarious, yet cut-throat style of punishing her axes.  She can draw a crowd at sound check, with one hand.   Her stage left rhythm partner in crime, Ryan Nanney, is one of kind.  Administering dulcet background vocals and an entertaining guitar diction all his own.   FFR would not be the same without him, or his antics.  Following right up alongside Ryan, are the suave bass line deliverances by Aaron Elliot.   Though he’s been known to pay too much money for flip flops,  he makes up for it with his convivial disposition, on and off stage.   His tranquil, yet sometimes, zealous stage presence, is a prodigious and serving balance to the rest of the crew.  Rounding off the quintet is time keeper and dub step extraordinaire, Jordan Cullen.  Whether he’s tossing his locks around, standing on his kit or giving himself a lightshow with one hand whileffr (4 of 14)

playing with the other.   You can always count on him oppressing his cymbals and scaring the hell out of his floor toms as well as on his unequivocal groove, to keep you excited.  A solid, proficient, animated drummer is what makes a good live show, Great. Jordan brings all this and more to the table, adding the  last but certainly not least, defining texture, to this musical Picasso.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing their intoxicating live show and

 ffr (5 of 5)

you live in Pennsylvania this month.  You may want to clear a few last minute dates off your calendar, so you can go see them while they’re in town.   You have multiple options….. so there’s no excuses.  Their first face rocking date back in the Commonwealth, is June 9th 2011.  They’ll be performing a 90 minute set at Suns Stadium in Hagerstown, MD, for "Thirsty Thursday Thunder Live".  This gig is all ages and is outdoors.  Show starts at 7pm.  Their next stop, will be at the Break Away II in Hagerstown, MD, on June 10th 2011.  FFR will perform another 90 minute eargasmic set, with the show starting at 8pm. This show is 21+.  On June11th 2011,  Fools for Rowan will be playing at the Horses and Hogs benefit, Hosted by Moe Rock and 105.7 the X,  in Middletown, PA, at Harmony Hall.  Recording artist "Burn Halo" will be the headlining band for the event FFR (22 of 27)

and go on immediately after FFR’s 6pm set.  Other bands on the bill include: Super Bob, Scarlet Carson, 1 Echo 1, Along Those Lines, Dive and Robbing Noll.  The benefit starts at 2pm.  Get there early for all the other fun and festivities. This is an all ages event, and is an outdoor venue.   Now, if for some odd reason you are out of the country this weekend and can’t make any of the shows.  Don’t fret.  They’ll be performing two more shows the following weekend on June 18th 2011.  The first will be at Appalachian Harley Davidson in Mechanicsburg, PA, for their 10th Anniversary celebration.  They will perform a 45 minute set at 3pm.  This show is all ages, has FREE admission and is sponsored by 105.7 The X.  Then later that night, the Big show.  FFR will be opening for alternative rock veterans, the Gin Blossoms.  This show is at The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA.  It is an all  ages event and the show starts at 8pm.   I know, I’ll be at all these shows and for less than you probably spend on your Mocha chinos  in a week, you could be at all of them too.

I will warn you now, once you see their live show and meet them all. There have been cases of fans showing signs of going through FFR withdrawal, in between encounters.   These symptoms are not life threatening.  As always, if you feel you are truly dying, call 911.

ffr (9 of 14)     ffr (11 of 14)

Make sure you don’t miss out on these shows.  It could be the last time you can see them live, without having to pay 50$ for nosebleeds at their concerts.  Good music, good people, good times, stupid human tricks.

FOOLS FOR ROWAN – Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled: Steady Rockin’, Alternative and Absolutely Can’t Miss!

FOOLS FOR ROWAN - They’re hip. They’re now. They’re Steady Rockin’ and Alternative. They’re a Modern Rock band that will eventually be more famous than they could ever probably imagine. They’re: FOOLS FOR ROWAN. Let me say this, this band isn’t foolin’ around with theircontagious and legit Alternative-Rock meets Hard Rock sound and style. Originating from the grand and Rock historical city of Nashville, Tennessee, this five piece is commercially accessible while still bestowing a blue-collar appeal. Fools For Rowan released their debut album Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled back in 2009, via Lava Lamp Records and it is a can’t miss of it’s genre.

It’s very difficult for me to not be impressed by the vocals of Erin Mullins, she is a show stealer. Erin’s range is head turning and she comes across as so damn natural that it’s scary. Nothing sounds forced as I listen to Erin sing on this entire album. Just a true vocal talent is she. Not to overlook the rest of this band that makes Fools For Rowan sound so inventively Rockin’, this young group of musicians sound as if they’ve been together for a decade.

As I listen to Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled, I hear a vocalist and band that doesn’t seem to hold nuthin’ back. When Fools For Rowan are playing full-tilt with TangledBurnt Around the Edges and Living Dangerously, they’re high octane energy to let it all Rock is infectiousMetal be thy name. There are ballads on this album and they showcase Erin’s provocative crooning skills, she could probably make a pissed-off copperhead snake transform into vapors… yeah, she’s that goodNo andDead are two well written ballads that don’t light up the sappy meter, both fit right into the diverse Rockin’ mix I hear on Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled.

If forced to choose my favorite song from this album, then that song is: It’s Alright. I cannot help being reminded of the legendary Joan Jettas I listen to Erin Mullins vocals on this Rockin’ and boppin, free groovin’ strewn song. Rachel Brandsness on lead guitar and Ryan Harrison Nanney on rhythm guitar both dish out some creative licks that are guaranteed not to go unnoticed. A refreshing Rock sound and originalitysure does go a long way, Fools For Rowan have both qualities.

Fools For Rowan have created quite an impressive sound, incorporating Rock and Hard Rock with a blend of Alternative stylings. Rock fans who want to catch onto a band that is rising faster than a thermostat in the deep South, in the middle of July, should take notice here. I sincerely look forward to witnessing Fools For Rowan continue their climb on the ladder of Rock ‘n’ Roll success.

When We Were BeautifulExpand

Fools For Rowan are the latest artist to rise from the Nashville flames, a female-fronted rock quintet who have been around for just over a year now. Debut single 'Burnt Around The Edges' drives with down-n-dirty guitars and soaring vocals. I was a little unmoved with the lo-fi sounding drums in the first verse but the impact of the first chorus when they dive crystal clear smack bang in the middle of the mix certainly told me; it turned out to be a great production technique and a great way to help develop a simple-sounding rock song. The backing vocals in the latter parts of the verses really add depth and the lead guitar work showcases some interesting ideas throughout. The solo section is a little flat, especially at the beginning but lifts towards the end;, I think overall the track has potential as a good rock song but lacks that real and raw impact to help it stand out although this could be down to post-production work rather than the band's song-writing abilities. Hearing it live would definitely cast the deciding vote.

The band's latest single, Dead, is a slighty more sinister and calmer affair, showcasing the band's rock-ballad side and highlighting a more-matured writing style. Soaring strings really lift the choruses and the solo section is a lot stronger in this song. It drops and builds in all the right places and really holds its own as a great-sounding rock ballad, with the passion and feeling I felt was lacking in Burnt Around The Edges a lot more evident here. Check out the video for Dead, where the visuals help to aid the lyrical meaning; amateur videos can be really difficult to get looking professional but Fools For Rowan have definitely pulled it off here:

The band continue to tour across the US, so if you live across the pond be sure to try and catch them soon. For everyone else, head over to the band's Facebook page to keep up to date with everything that's new with Fools For Rowan.

Pure Grain AudioExpand

I recently had the opportunity to speak with the members of the Alternative Rock band Fools For Rowan about their latest release, Twisted, Tied Up, Tangled. The Nashville-based band has been steadily gaining a loyal fan base by playing a brand of music that is easily accessible and radio friendly. This CD combines great songwriting and a brilliant production with hooks so catchy you won't be unable to get them out of your head long after the player has stopped. The band is getting ready to hit the road for a U.S. Tour. Here's what they had to say about their new release.

Now that your new disc, Twisted, Tied Up. Tangled, is complete how do you feel about it? Are you satisfied with the outcome?
FFR: We're extremely satisfied with the outcome of this record! We're so proud of it and just can't wait for the whole world to hear it!!

What was the writing process like for this CD? Did you guys all write together? How long did it take?
FFR: The writing process was awesome! We're lucky enough to have Shaye Smith, a Grammy-nominated songwriter, as co-writer and co-producer on every song on this record… so we had the best in the business! Lead singer, Erin Mullins, co-wrote all the songs on the record along with Smith and 3 other co-writers over the span of about 1 year.

The name of the band, Fools For Rowan, is interesting to say the least and sounds as if there is a story behind it. Where did the name come from and what is the story?
Erin: I came up with the name 'Rowan' when I combine my mom's name, Robyn, with my grandpa's name, Darwin. They were the ones who encouraged me to chase my dreams so I thought naming this band after them was only right! The 'Fools For' just seemed to fall into place.

Give us some insight into the record and meaning behind its title?
FFR:We really wanted to create a record that meant something. A record that you could play over and over without getting tired of. Each song has its own character. We have a song for your tough day and another song for rocking out driving down the freeway in your car. It was important to us was that each song be able to stand alone as a quality single with emotion, purpose and musicality. In today's music industry, there really is no room for filler songs that just take up album space. Most of all, each song has a meaning and interpretation for each of us. How a song affects you may be different from how it affects one of us, but what matters is that it is making us feel something, it's taking us to that awesome place only a great song can!

Are there any tracks on this record that are personal favorites or that have good stories behind them?
FFR:Every song has some sort of significance to us, but a couple of our personal favorites would have to be "Light Me Up" and "No". There's something unique and powerful about these two that made them so cool to record and a blast to play live. "It's Alright" is a fun song with a great story behind it because the lyrics start out recounting a bunch of bad things happening, like finding out all your bread is moldy and that your dog has eaten your shoes…and it turns out that this really was a literal day in the life of Erin Mullins, lead singer. Sometimes when you have a bad day you just have to turn it into something good like a song!

How does it make you feel when the emotion and power that you envisioned in the recording studio, comes to life while playing in front of a crowd?
Erin: It's even more than I could have envisioned! The songs take on a life of their own in the studio, and then once you play them for an audience they become even more alive and that is when the emotion and power is palpable…it's amazing!

Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?
FFR:We have been influenced by so many bands, both individually and as a whole band. Probably some of our greatest collective influences have been the classic rock bands of the 70's and 80's. Bon Jovi, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, but we also have a lot of current influences like Nickleback and The Kings of Leon.

What artists would fans be surprised to find on your IPod?
Erin: Reba McEntire

Rachel: Movie Scores

Ryan: Backstreet Boys

FOOLS FOR ROWAN - Summerfest 2011

July 6th, 2011 Milwaukee, WI

If you didn’t get a chance to check out Fools For Rowan at Summerfest, you missed a good show with harmonizing vocals and the jamming tunes of a great band. Hailing from Nashville, Fools For Rowan includes lead vocalist Erin Mullins, lead guitarist Rachel Brandsness, bassist Aaron Elliott, Ryan Nanney on rhythm guitar and Jordan Cullen on drums.

Rachel on lead guitar was so incredibly adorable and man, that girl can rock out! She looked like she was born with a guitar in her hands. Drummer Jordan Cullen was a bit of entertainment himself when his hair was flying around with every pound on the drums. All drummers should definitely have long hair. The rest of the band was having fun as well.

My only negative, which really isn’t a negative at all, is that I would have loved to see more band interaction with each other. Sure they had their jumps but not as much as they could have really had. They all definitely have the talent and great vocals, but I just wanted more.

It was awesome of them to have a sign up for their website to receive a free CD. Getting your music out there is so important and this band truly knows that.

I was able to chat with Erin before they came out to Summerfest and one thing we talked about was the social media and how having a Twitter & Facebook these days is important to keep fans up to date. She agreed and said, “Why not get on Facebook and talk to them? We do that. Every member of the band gets on Facebook, looks at all the comments, talks to the people and tries to make a connection because they are talking to us. So it’s just a combination of everything. Everybody is working together to make that happen.”

So get out there and get on their Facebook and Twitter and start chatting it up. Fans are so important. She also said about you fans,“I think any kind of activity that the fans can see what you are doing makes them feel like they know you and that’s the goal. We have been really lucky with our fans and we kind of have this outlook like we want to make friends with our fans instead of them just being fans. Friends are for life and fans just go from one thing to another. We know so many of our fans on a first name basis and really talk to them and want to be close to them. Anything we can do at this point as far as putting up pictures, we absolutely want to do.” Well put Erin.

If you didn’t get to catch them at Summerfest, no worries, they will be heading back this way September 17th at The Rave in Milwaukee. Go support and have a rocking out good time.

LOS ANGELES, CA - On August 17th the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee will host local rockers, Fools For Rowan, and worldwide superstars Evanescence. The 1661 maximum capacity sign will surely be put in jeopardy, at the historic auditorium, as this is Evanescence’s only U.S tour date this year. Fools For Rowan are more than an adequate opening act and are sure to prove to everyone in attendance that they are very capable of being headliners.

Fools For Rowan have most recently been in rotation on Nashville’s independent radio station, Lightning 100, and played the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest earlier this month. Their debut album, “Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled,” as well as their energetic live sets have launched Fools For Rowan on the road to rock and roll stardom and has allowed for them to open for artists such as Sick Puppies, Halestorm, Gin Blossoms, Trapt, Adelitas Way and many more.

While Fools For Rowan are teetering with mass U.S appeal, Evanescence are a full fledge musical phenomenon. With over 20 million records sold worldwide and two Grammys to their name; Evanescenceis characterized by singer Amy Lee‘s masterful melodies and pristine piano.

Fools For Rowan are lead by Erin Mullins‘ soaring vocals, Ryan Harrison Nanney and Rachel Brandsness guitar riffs, and the tight battery of Aaron Elliot (bass) and Jordan Cullen (drums). The kinetic quintet continues to tour relentlessly throughout the U.S, winning over audiences and continuing to spread the power of rock and roll.

“We’ve been rocking out to Evanescence for years,” the band has said, ”So to share the stage with rock heavyweights like them is an honor. It’s better than Christmas!”

Fools for Rowan will close this summer’s Sunset Concert Series Thursday on the Shryock steps with a blast of their high-charged Nashville rock and roll.

The band released its debut album, “Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled,” in 2010. It’s a collection of loud, catchy rock songs driven by singer Erin Mullins’ powerful vocals and Rachel Brandsness’ alternately crunchy and slick guitar work. Ryan Nanney, Aaron Elliott and Jordan Cullen round out the band on rhythm guitar, bass and drums, respectively.

The band’s lead single, “Dead,” weaves together dark acoustic guitar strumming, big electric chords and portentous bass with Mullins’ wailing vocals. Despite the song’s gothic tendencies (on full display in the official video), which call to mind Evanescence, the wistful chorus subtly hints at the band’s Nashville roots.

Mullins said the band came together while she was working on a solo project. She said she’d been in a band before and realized while working alone she wanted a band again. The band members came together because they knew each other, except Brandsness, who auditioned.

From there, Mullins said things went really fast. They had their first show two months after coming together.

Mullins said the band is focused on delivering fun, intense shows.

“The secret to our success lies in our live shows,” she said. “That’s the goal, to leave everybody worn out when they leave the show.”

She said they’ve developed a devoted fan base with their shows, but also by giving devotion back to the fans.

“We’re trying to make friends, not fans,” she said.

She said they connect with fans through social networking websites, but also meet them in person and have gone to dinner with them and thrown parties with them. Mullins said the Internet has made music so accessible, a band’s success is actually about what they do out on the road on a personal level with fans.

“We’ll give away free CDs because it’s important they have it, not pay for it,” she said.

She said the band’s already working on a second album. She said they’re trying to translate the energy of their live shows into an album.

That energy has already bled into the recording process, which she said they’re doing while on the road.

“That’s kind of chaotic and really fun at the same time,” she said.

Hopefully the recording doesn’t slow down their tour, which Mullins said they’re playing by ear. In any case, Carbondale will get its first taste of these fools Thursday. Let’s just hope the old Shryock can handle their rock.

CARBONDALE — The 2011 Sunset Concert series comes to a close tonight with a performance by alternative rock/pop group Fools for Rowan.

Only eight months after releasing its debut album in November 2009, the band had already toured from coast to coast, opening for rock heavyweights Halestorm, Sick Puppies, Trapt and Adelitas Way and performing at annual Fourth of July music juggernaut Summerfest in Milwaukee.

The music video for the group’s song “Dead” has been featured on Fuse TV and its music has been played on more than 200 radio stations nationwide.

The band hales from Nashville, the same hometown as Paramore and Kings of Leon, two worldwide favorites that Fools for Rowan are often compared to because of the band’s bended guitar chords and female lead singer.

Playing to a packed house, opening act Fools For Rowan had the local support of Nashville fans when they started their 8PM slot.  A crowd of well over 1200 were already there to see the local rock faves featuring Lead Singer, Erin Mullins, decked out in full “Joan Jett” black leather and black tank top leading the crowd through the FUSE TV hit “Dead” as well as a cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

Rachel Brandsness, Lead Axe Wielder, was a foil that kept the crowd going. Since when do people show up for opening acts anymore? Especially third bill? With the support of 102.9, The Buzz, the only non-classic Rock station in town, local fans were there to support a local act that is diverse enough to play Popfest and the SXSW Conference.  I think Nashville is ready to rock.

Fools For Rowan - 1200 plus crowd

On the same night that Maroon 5 and Train were playing at Bridgestone, a near sold out crowd where Kelly Clarkson was spotted having a good time, was taking hold as day turned to night at the War Memorial Auditorium.

This was a unique opportunity since it was Evanescence only U.S. Show this year, spending most of their time in Europe where they still have a rabid following  weaving a fine line between radio ready songs and heavier then Dimmu Borgir Sonics.

For some reason a tornado had touched down in Fools For Rowan Drummer Jordan Cullens’ hair, with his blond mesh going every other direction, he still managed to pound out a solid set. I don’t know how he did it, with all that wind raging around him, but, everything came off smooth.

Art of Dying - Jonny Hetherington

Art of Dying, whether it is about the Tibetan Book of The Dead or George Harrison’s song offAll Things Must Pass, played a solid set. The Canadians have landed. Their most recent album was produced by one of the biggest Producers of Modern Rock, Howard Benson (P.O.D., My Chemical Romance) and mixed by the guru of Metal, Chris Lord-Alge.

The main plus for Art of Dying is the vocal harmonies sans-vocal correction software.  Not that they sound like the two bands, but, it was kind of like P.O.D. with Bon Jovi/Queensryche harmonies over the top. The most important thing was Lead singer, Jonny Hetherington’s shirt, a full reproduction of the AC/DC Powerage album cover. How can you not like the guy?

Art of Dying has been on the radio with “Get Through This” but it was really the slow heavy stuff that included a cover of Alice in Chain’s “Man in The Box” where they really shined. Heavy and grooving worked best.

Evanescence at War Memorial - Nashville

This was really a celebration. If you wanted to see Evanescence this year in the States, this was the moment. There were those that could say they were there and the rest will have to just understand why Amy Lee really is the Black Swan incarnate in her black tutu style skirt, black hair and the voice of a female operatic Viking.  She conquered the world with that voice.  In today’s Katy Perry “La-La Land” where selling a million records makes you on par with Michael Jackson, “Fallen” sold seventeen million copies with  a beautiful balance between heavier- than- Sabbath and more melodic than Queen production.

Evanesence, stage right, lighted guitar case

The story of the Little Rock, Arkansas band is only a stone’s throw from Nashville where they were discovered by Producer Pete Matthews, who is not widely credited, but helped to develop the sound that is now Evanescence.  It’s always fun when you know the back story.

Amy stopped before she started when they brought out a grand piano mid-set. When she sat down to play, there was a string out of tune and she stopped, walked to the front of the stage and talked with the audience while a piano tuner did his job. With a voice like that, it wasn’t hard to believe she has a good ear.

Evanescence’ drummer was insanely great. The blond hair, was it Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters? No, it was Will Hunt, who actually played with Tommy Lee’s band. Will Hunt has showmanship that goes beyond some stick twirling. He honestly had some hand technique that was amazing.  He was tight as well.

Amy Lee

If you weren’t there, you missed it. There is nothing better than fantastic live performance. You can take your MP3’s and shove them…well you get it.

It was a beautiful evening and one of the better shows this year.

Soaring vocals, powerful guitar licks and intensely personal lyrics – these are just some of the elements that define rock powerhouse Fools For Rowan.
Fronted by singer Erin Mullins and backed by Jordan Cullen (drums), Aaron Elliott (bass), Ryan Harrison Nanney (rhythm guitar) and Rachel Brandsness (lead guitar), the Nashville fivesome has been playing together for just over a year and is already on the fast track to stardom.
After releasing their debut album Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled in 2009, Fools for Rowan hit the road and quickly began to develop a fan base with their energetic live set. They’ve shared the stage with such dynamic rock contemporaries as Halestorm, Sick Puppies, Adelita’s Way and Throwing Gravity.
The band’s first single “Burnt Around the Edges” received acclaim from college radio in the US and Canada. The second single “Dead” received spins on Top 40, college and modern rock radio and the video was featured on Fuse TV’s On-Demand.
Only looking ahead, Fools For Rowan continues to tour throughout the US, winning over audiences and continuing to spread the power of rock & roll.
